I find this very interesting and did something somewhat similar with WordPress and a framework I created called Reptile. But after reading the post over at PeepCode I want to redo my entire structure. I am using a base.css file and individual CSS files for the posts, but my way of thinking has been completely changed.

The structure I have works fairly well, but now I'm not entirely sure of that ;-) I tend to over think things myself instead of keeping it simple. Back to the drawing board :D

I almost cringed when reading this because I can relate to the exact same feeling and was afraid you were going to unleash the silver bullet of building web applications and my past year spent learning ZF and Doctrine would all be for naught.

The more and more I run into these types of situations the more I realized: the time you invest into something is time you only get back if you apply that knowledge. Because I understand ZF and Doctrine well, I can now apply to projects in the future. It is imperative that you apply this knowledge in the future if you intend to benefit from what you've learned.

Regret for wasted time results in more wasted time.

And what else have I learned along the way? Well, I'd say learning about ZF and deep diving into some of the ZF components gave me a much wider knowledge of PHP 5.

Even when I'm building applications, or perhaps a simple script, when building out components I am now knowledgeable in a whole different array of patterns that I've seen implemented firsthand in PHP.

There's also benefits to using a framework that you may not realize until down the road -- the main one being maintainability. That said, frameworks have their time and place and aren't a one-size-fits-all solution.

Anyways, I appreciate your blog posts and have been going through your archives for the past week. I can really relate to it because I seem to be going through a lot of the same challenges you are on a weekly basis.

Hi,

First off I think this topic of "People who make me feel stupid" is quite cool and I know exactly how you feel. Many people out there have these brilliant ideas and seem to be able to seamlessly throw all these things into a pot and come out with amazing solutions.

I did the whole write my own CMS thing too as I wanted to use flat files. See http://the.0gravity.co.uk/universe/about/ where things are stored in "email format" which makes for easy parsing. The site is powered by Zend Framework but it's extremely minimal but easy enough to extend. Of course it was based off of Yaki http://the.taoofmac.com/space/Projects/Yaki but I needed a PHP version. And of course items are indexed via Spotlight on the Mac so my own posts/notes show up locally too which is handy.

Looking forward to the next post!
